These delicious balsamic onions are typical Italian antipasti, great served with an aperitif. Flat, saucer-like Borettane onions, a specially sourced Italian variety, are preserved in balsamic vinegar for a unique sweet and sour flavour, making them the perfect accompaniment to any number of dishes. Nothing like the traditional UK pickled onion these are sweeter and much easier to eat in vast, greedy quantities. Extremely moreish.
I love these flat onions, in delicious balsamic – but then I prefer pickled onions to sweeties. It's a Northern thing. Debora Robertson, Red magazine

- Or you could quarter them to serve on a plate of antipasti with some prosciutto, roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and olives.
- Delicious with cheese, they can also add a distinctive, sweet flavour to chutneys.
- A versatile cooking ingredient, try them roasted to accompany meat dishes or added to onion gravy - perfect with sausages and mash!
